Ankle and Foot Pain

Our Recommended Treatments

The ankle is a complex joint made up of three connected joints: the talocrural, subtalar, and inferior tibiofibular joints. Together, they allow smooth movement and flexibility needed for walking, running, and daily activities. When this area gets injured—whether due to a strain, tear, or impact- it can lead to strong and sometimes long-lasting ankle pain. An ankle sprain is one of the most common injuries and usually happens when the foot twists beyond its normal range. This sudden movement stretches the ligaments too far, causing small tears that result in pain, swelling, and reduced mobility. Fractures can also cause ankle pain. Even a minor break can make standing or walking extremely painful. The fibula bone is more likely to fracture than the tibia. Other possible causes of ankle discomfort include arthritis, gout, muscle degeneration, and infections, although these are less common.

Treatments include:

Swelling and Arthritis in Ankle

Symptoms of ankle pain depend on the root cause, and treatment options vary accordingly. For example, ankle sprains often cause swelling, bruising, stiffness, and tenderness. Even after rest and ice therapy, the affected area may remain sensitive to touch.

Arthritis in the ankle shares many of these symptoms but is caused by joint inflammation. Over time, wear and tear can lead to bones rubbing against each other, increasing pain and stiffness. The most frequently diagnosed types of ankle arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, both of which require proper medical care to be managed effectively.

Foot Pain

Foot pain does not have one single cause. In many cases, it results from direct injury, repeated strain, or overuse of the joints. Some conditions develop gradually and may not be linked to a specific accident. Common contributors to foot pain include tendonitis, diabetes, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and other medical conditions.

One of the leading causes of foot discomfort is plantar fasciitis. This condition occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick tissue band running along the bottom of the foot, becomes strained or inflamed. Like many foot and ankle conditions, plantar fasciitis can be successfully treated with the guidance of an experienced medical provider.
